Located in the Southeast corner of Arizona, Cochise County is the home of Fort Huachuca's US Army Intelligence Center and the city of Sierra Vista. Sierra Vista is a city of about 44,000 people seventy-files miles southeast of Tucson at an elevation of 4600 feet. It has mild winters and the summers are much cooler than Tucson and Phoenix. It has become a popular location for retirees because of the natural beauty, mild temperatures, low crime, and the reasonable cost of quality housing. Some people cross the border into Mexico for low cost prescription medicines and dental care.
Ramsey Canyon and the San Pedro River are world famous locations for birding due to the hundreds of species within varied habitats and elevations. It's the hummingbird capital of the United States with fifteen species. Among astronomers Arizona is renowned for it's clear night skies and Cochise County is considered the premier location for amateur observatories. The county works closely with The Nature Conservancy to preserve water, wildlife, and nature. The county also features the popular tourist cities of Tombstone and the eclectic Bisbee.
The landscape in Arizona depends on elevation. In the nearby Huachuca Mountains there are bear, deer, wild turkey, javelina, and mountain lions living within a varied ecosystem above 5000 feet. The valley locations are grassland with mesquite trees typical of the dry high desert. Annual precipitation is 14" of rain with more falling in the mountains. Snow is rare in the valleys. Summer temperatures are in the low 90s during the day and 60s at night. Summer heat is moderated by the monsoon rains. Winter temperatures average 60 degrees during the day and can fall into the 20s at night during January.
